Dear Concerned
Citizens:
Hello
SHOT/ODPA Members & Friends,
Just a word to tell you that the Christmas Tea
was a wonderful success! Everyone loved it. We sold out at the
first two tea times and had a good showing at the third. Thanks
to everyone who helped plan, set up and do this year's Chrismas
Tea; we couldn't have done it without you!
Reminder that the updating of the General Plan draft is before
the City Council. The Council is hearing public input on this
Tuesday, Dec. 15, and plans to make a decision on Tuesday, January
19th. Although many of you sent emails to the Planning Commission
requesting that SHOT/ODPA be included in the wording in the General
Plan, the city staff explained that we are not included because
we are not a quasi part of the city (as is the Torrance Historical
Society), and other organizations were not named (there is no
other preservation organization in the city of Torrance), and
staff is not certain that we will be around in twenty years--the
length of the general plan. Commissioners Browning, Bush and Skoll
stated that they believed that SHOT/ODPA has made significant
contributions and should be included. Chair Weideman asked staff
to explain what was explained to them--I've already stated it.
The Planning Commission did not approve the General Plan, as is,
but rather sent it to the City Council for their review. So, the
short of it is, please send your comments to the City Council,
and please make every effort to attend one of both of the meetings.
In addition, SHOT made some suggestions regarding the wording
in the history section of the general plan--ie. the boundaries
are listed incorrectly and the description of the original city
is a "Y" which it is not. We will be bringin this up
again on December 15 and January 19th. In addition, we have sent
a letter to the City Council, City Manager, and City Attorney,
and have attached a copy for you. Please feel free to use any
of the points made in the letter in your emails, letters, or comments
at the hearing. Below is the email from the Community Development
Office. Email comments to The Mayor and Council Members via cddgeneralplan@torranceca.gov
Thank you for caring about preservation in the city of Torrance.
Together, we are making a positive difference for our city and
for the kids of tomorrow.
Best Wishes,
