Dear Save Historic Old Torrance
Members:
Save Historic Old Torrance is encouraging
all members to participate in the sidewalk survey being
conducted by the Torrance Historical Society. The dates
are this Saturday and Sunday and next Saturday and Sunday.
We hope you’ll participate! Below are the details
from the Torrance Historical Society. In addition, we
hope that you will plan on attending the next Save Historic
Old Torrance meeting on Thursday, September 29th at 7:00
PM at the Zamperini House, 2028 Gramercy Ave.
When: There are now just two weekends
left to participate -- Saturday and Sunday, September
17th & 18th, 24th & 25th, 2011
Where: Torrance Historical Society & Museum - 1345
Post Avenue, Old Torrance
Time: 9:00 AM
What to Wear: Comfy clothing and walking shoes and sunscreen
In celebration of the City's upcoming
Centennial in 2012, the Torrance Historical Society is
seeking volunteers from the community to assist in a field
survey documenting all structures within the Olmsted Districts
-- the original footprint of the City. And . . . you're
invited to be a part of this history!
The area is comprised of 109 city
blocks with residential, commercial and industrial sub-districts
totaling approximately 2300 structures (see why they need
lots of volunteers?). Boarders encompassing this area
are Dominguez St. to Plaza del Amo, and Crenshaw Blvd.
to Western Avenue. The purpose of the survey is to document
all historical structures within this designated area.
The survey will take place over
a three-weekend timeframe -- Saturday and Sunday, September
10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, 24th & 25th, 2011.
The Survey will begin at 9:00 AM at the Torrance Historical
Society & Museum (1345 Post Avenue, Old Torrance)
with classroom-style training.
Last weekend, was the first session,
and already 1/3 of the blocks have been assigned! The
volunteers are enjoying it so much, they are coming back
to do more blocks. Plus . . . each volunteer will receive
dining discounts to local restaurants in Old Torrance
-- Red Car Brewery & Restaurant, Tortilla Cantina,
Daniela's and BFD. Complimentary Torrance Bakery breakfast
treats and refreshments will provide each morning.
Here's how it works . . .
Attend a 35 minute classroom-style
training session at the Museum (you only need to attend
once!) - begins at 9:00 AM, Saturday & Sunday
You'll be given a photo ID, block
packet, clipboard, pencils, water & treats
"Pick a block, and take a
walk!" (as our President likes to say) -- each volunteer
will be assigned a block and asked to complete a standard
form (don't worry, there are only about 6 items that need
to be checked-off) -- done from the sidewalk only -- no
need to knock on doors, or walk onto property
Based on the field survey data, each structure will be
classified as contributing, altered-contributing or as
a non-contributing structure
Survey only takes one to two hours, and is even more fun
if you partner with a friend
Return completed survey packet to Museum in exchange for
dining discounts Downtown
